What is Acne?

Most of us have been bothered by acne at some point or the other, but are unaware of the exact causes of acne.

Acne is a skin disorder that occurs most commonly among teenagers. It consists of various kinds of blemishes, mainly on the face, upper chest and back.

A few blemishes are normal, but severe acne may result in permanent scarring. Some teenagers find severe acne so distressing that they develop emotional problems which can be severe.

An estimated 80 percent of the people suffering from acne in their life. Bacteria is the common culprit of all forms of acne.

Acne is essentially caused by hormonal changes during teenage years.

  1. One kind of hormone stimulates the oil glands, which then grows larger and produce a lot of oil.
  2. The pores of the oil glands at the skin surface are easily plugged, and oil accumulates under the plugs, causing blackheads, whiteheads or pimples which are physical manifestations of acne.

Acne consists of:

Whiteheads

Blackheads

Pimples

Deeper boil-like lesions called nodules.

Acne can be classified into three types depending on its kind and place of occurrences:

Mild Acne

Whiteheads

Blackheads

Pimples

 

Moderate Acne

More pimples and pustules on face, and possibly chest or back.

 

Severe Acne

Lots of nodules which are large and painful on the:

Face

Chest

Back

Other areas of the body too can be affected.

This can lead to permanent scarring.

There are over 50 types and hence it becomes difficult to find a common cure.

The way you live – your lifestyle and stress levels.

The food you eat – oily, deep fried stuff or lots of fruits and vegetables.

Beauty is a matter of regular care and if you maintain regular hours, get plenty of sleep, eat sensibly, get adequate relaxation, exercise and strive for freedom from nervous strain, you are more likely to progress towards achieving a cure.
